I remember in my younger days this used to make me angry but, pushing fifty now, I see a great opportunity. That is, newly opened land. The local timber harvest company is conducting a fuel break operation. To pay for the protection of the subdivision I live in, they are also clearcutting several hundred acres. This is one of those plots. My aim is to share in the replanting of this previously boreal type forest with food trees, as opposed to monoculture pine. Apples and walnuts do well in this area. I may have enough work to last me the rest of my working life. It is an uphill endeavor. I might even get in trouble but, I feel satisfied that I’m doing the right thing, even if I don’t reap what I sow. To the future
