Exploring and Defining Wildtending

hello everyone.

recently i stumbled onto a facebook conversation where someone that is a self-proclaimed anarcho-primitivist showed a disdain for wildtending. the explanation for this seemed to be mostly due to the fact that it involves elements of the human manipulating an otherwise wild environment.

what struck me immediately is that this (to me) serves to further the modern story that humans are separate from nature. it also carries on the story that manipulation is a bad thing. of course, there can be manipulation with malicious intent, but manipulation in and of itself is not “bad”. i see healthy manipulation, in the name of reciprocity, as the foundation of all healthy relationships. ecology itself is full of examples of this.

i would love to hear everyone’s thought on this. it is something i really want to explore more deeply (mainly so that i better understand the human relationship to the wild/nature and how that allows us to meet our needs).

i would also love to hear what wildtending means to you, as well as what ways you practice wildtending in your life.

when i get some more internet time i will chime in and give my own answers. looking forward.

edit: i should add that part of my intention here is to gather a more comprehensive view of other’s experiences with and definitions of wildtending, as i plan in the future to write an essay on the topic. i will also add that i think it would be great if we could broaden what i see as the common understanding of what wildtending is (for example, going beyond “planting back”).

Hi,

My philosophy could be described as animalist. That means I openly admit that hunans, including me, are nothing more AND nothing less than other animals. We have been created to fit perfectly into our environment by evolution. There is no sense of life other than to thrive and enjoy the beautiful world that’s been given to us. We live to eat and eat to live. We are neither good nor evil. If God is an actual intelligent being, it’s obvious, that he’s incomprehensible to us, and whether there is life after death or not, is none of animal’s concerns. He gave me enough: a healthy body, a healthy mind and a wonderful world to live in. I must do everything to live the best I can.

Civilization is a virtual virus, whose sole purpose is to mindlessly spread throughout the population. It has created False Gods for us (progress, capitalism, various religions) and makes us obey. It limits our resources, destroys our planet, represses our instincts and free will, hijacks our emotions and dreams ONLY TO ALLOW for the existence of the masses. It’s not evil, because evil is a civilised word. Good, evil, morality, Gods who watch our every move: these all exist just to make us obey.

Humans are severely maladapted to the civlised way of life. Civ tells us otherwise, but we suffer greatly in every respect. Chronic stress, anxiety, mental disease of a mind that wants to run free, unimaginable physical and genetic deterioration, cancer, diabetes, and literally every infectious disease, we owe all this to civ. It just wrecks havoc on our minds and bodies. We are so repressed that now our main activity is looking for “entertainment” in various forms. Drugs help, but with terrible side effects. Go ahead and tell a hunter-gatherer to go to work for 8h every day, sitting in front of a screen, just to pay the rent for their apartment and buy junk food. Just listen to yourself saying this… isn’t it absolutely ridiculous?

So, based on the above, my philosophy can be defined as follows (from Nathan Martinez’s “Rise like Lions”):

Animalism - Living for the pleasures of food, sex, friendship and the spine chilling thrill of the hunt. Enjoyment of vigorous health and physical drives. Motivation by sensual, physical, or carnal appetites rather than moral, spiritual, or intellectual forces.

“I am a wild animal. I recognize NO authority other than the the laws of nature (true God’s laws, which cannot be changed or manipulated to favor one create over another), no purpose other than the enjoyment of life, no moral absolutes other than looking out for my children and myself. I embrace all aspects of our nature and experience freedom that the domesticated and civilised mind cannot comprehend. I am both a caring parent and a vicious predator, passionate lover and ferocious warrior, the creator and destroyer of Life. I am extreme: light AND dark.”

And now, based on these premises, the following moral code can be derived (also by Nathan Martinez, but I just could not say it in any better way):

  • I am a wild animal

  • I am a survivor

  • I am a ferocious warrior

  • I live to eat and eat to live

  • I live for the pleasures of food, sex, friendship and the thrill of the chase

  • I hunt, kill and eat other living things

  • I take what I want, hold onto it and fight to keep it.

  • I do whatever I want if I think I can get away with it.

  • I try to get the most reward with the least amount of effort

  • I challenge and test everything.

  • I take big risks only when the odds are in my favor or I have no other choice

  • I use whatever tools are at hand to get the job done

  • I prefer to live in a small, close-knit group of family and friends

  • I put my children first

  • I cooperate and share only with my family, friends and potential allies

  • I am cautious with outsiders, who could be competitors or enemies

  • I threaten, harass, raid and viciously fight mt family’s enemies

  • I will fight to the death to defend my children

  • I will never surrender or allow myself to be captured.

This is extreme, but also very true. This is the true anarcho-primitivism and the only sustainable form of society. I love this philosophy, I was totally taken aback when I first discovered it. It answers every question about the world and Life in a rational manner and does not rely on irrational assumptions (God did this, God did that). This is part of me already. Every time I’m out in the wild I try to behave in this way. I love the extreme emotions, my true behaviour and insticts it brings out of me.

The aforementioned thrill of the chase is such a real and amazing thing. Especially when you have a slingshot or a bow and not a gun. One day, I was chasing down a squirrel for some half an hour. Never before have I been so alert. I had to hide, wait, constantly keep my eyes on it. And finally take the shot when it exposed itself enough. I missed, but on other occasions I did not. But I can tell you: my legs were trembling when I finally got the long awaited opportunity. I was exhausted later. And to be hungry and then eat your prey you’ve been chasing?? You REDEFINE food right away. It’s amazing how tasty things can be and how good it feels to eat. As I drift away from civ I have already become totally immune to common infectious diseases like cold or flu, I am more and more cold resistant, I am stronger, I see more things around me, my senses get sharper. I’m becoming a better human essentially.

Civ is BULLSHIT. I will repeat this, because I can’t stress it enough: We are perfectly adapted to the often breath-taking world we are living in and should do everything to live our lives the best we can. I feel so stifled and repressed in civilization that no words can describe my hatred towards it… I just can’t take this anymore. For what? the False Gods? haha. Thank you very much.

On the practical side, my parents are not hunter-gatherers so I still have much to learn. But with high school finals now almost over, I have no other goals than to rewild myself, revolutionize my diet, my clothing, everything. I train archery and slingshot every day, I’m learning everything that may come in handy later in the wild. As I’m not living in a prime world, so I need some means for getting around to meet people, explore new far-away wildernesses, etc, so I’ve spent the last year learning to design airplanes, so that I can build an aircraft specially suited for its mission: to serve as my mobile home. It’d have floats, special low drag configuration, 2 seats and just 28hp engine for dirt-cheap flying. When it’s ready, I’ll hit the road and become the most epic hunter-gatherer tramp on the planet.

And all this I WILL DO. There is no other option. I WILL take back what’s mine.

Best,
Liras
