Any Oregon or Washington communities I can join?

Working too hard in a computer job has finally taken it’s toll on my health. I have to slow down for the next year to rebuild my health and would LOVE to find a family-friendly community in Oregon or Washington where my son and I would be welcome, and where I can contribute. I could help with childcare, homeschooling, gardening, healing/counseling/life coaching, and pretty much anything else related to animals, children, nature or spirit. I’m a very good community member, easygoing, accepting, happy-go-lucky, low-maintenance and reliable. My son was born in a community and has lived in several during his 3 1/2 years. His dad (my ex) and I have a truly amazing co-parenting relationship and are both community-minded. Looking to get my hands in the earth and nestle into a new family of like-minded folks. Thank you for any advice or invites. <3 Dawn Damodari Jarocki

Hi Dawn, the feralculture communities are really just getting started, so I don’t have a ready answer for you for Oregon and Washington.

Having investigated many communities in WA and OR myself, I’d have to say you have a lot to choose from but not many that fit the feralculture model of nomadic/egalitarian/permaculture/etc. Not many landowners have converted to a landtrust/permaculture/welcoming to nomadic people quite yet. Although I hope they will. There’s only TWO that I know of: Wild Roots in North Carolina and the Alaska feralculture community.

Many communities I investigated in WA and OR are more on the eco-housing to commune continuum. Which may be your thing? If so, I’d check http://ic.org. The permies.com forum on community may be helpful too http://permies.com/forums/f-6/intentional-community
