This issue seems both so pressing and insignificant at the same time, and I have definitely dwelled on it a lot as well.
I donât have a straight forward answer. Personally Iâm of the persuasion that if you want to scale this rewilding, itâs not going to match up with paleolithic life ways, and again, how can we expect it to because our environment is so different from back then. There is no âbest wayâ to live, or one way or even infinite ways, âevolutionâ is really about responding to the environment, no progression involved. I think as a meta goal we should be striving towards how to inject paleo*-ness into written language (contradiction? yes. Is it possible? I donât know). In order to scale this effectively.
This makes me think of a convo I had with a friend whoâs into rewilding/permaculture and also a hyperpolyglot. Speaks like 10 languages, and I was asking them about how each language affects base reality. In their journey of acquiring more and more languages, they kept trying to learn more âancientâ ones, due to each language having in built assumptions about the world that aligned with civilization/ agriculture, property, etc etc. They got to sumerian, and it became clear that these ones that are accessible through the academy wonât have what they are looking for. They are part native American as well, so they went back to the roots, and now is learning those vocabularies. At the end of the day, I think to strive to be âtruly re-wildedâ isnât a realistic goal because I donât think it ever existed. There were infinite amounts of nuance and diversity environmentally, and probably just as many world views. I argue for the consciousness of seeing that our language and vocab is limited, and that consciousness is a cultivation to really strive for some sort of post-civ post-wild state.
Agricultural and false-post-scarcity through the totalitarian nature of our industrial systems have hegemony right now, so unless you want to wait your whole life for the crash, probably gotta figure out how to combine everything you know into something ânewâ.
Personally I am a fluent Chinese and English speaker, both languages of colonizers and agriculturalists, definitely empathize with what you are going through.
*I use paleo strictly as a time stamp reference (whatever the validity) to indicate pre-agriculture. No contemporary add-ons.
